Efforts are now underway to plan and coordinate medical, construction, and support teams to the most devastated countries hit by the tsunami including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, and India. Foursquare Missions is working to help coordinate these teams. If you would like to volunteer your services, click here and give us your name, telephone number, how you can help, the type of team you wish to be a part of, and dates you are available. Foursquare Missions will help connect you to those who are coordinating this effort.
CARE Responds to Asia Quake Disaster
On the morning of Sunday December 26, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, sending massive tsunamis across the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. Because many affected areas are inaccessible, the full extent of the damage has yet to be determined. However, it is estimated that more than 40,000 people have died and many more have lost their homes and property.
CARE, already at work in most of the countries hit by the tsunamis, is mounting an emergency response. In summary:
Sri Lanka appears to be the country hit hardest by the tsunami. CARE has already begun relief response programs in the affected areas and expects to provide food for 14,000 people in the Batticaloa district over the next several days.
In India, the affected area is in the southeast, mainly the coastal parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerela, Pondicherry and the nearby islands. CARE is coordinating our emergency response plans with Indian state and federal governments, and with a local partner.
The area most affected in Thailand includes the provinces of Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga and Ranong. While CARE did not have programs in these areas, it is now collaborating with aid organizations that do. CARE is assessing the situation with a focus on migrant populations.
The area most affected in Indonesia currently appears to be the province of Aceh, which felt the full force of the earthquake. While the Indonesian government has announced that the affected areas will be open for humanitarian workers, CARE is waiting to see if travel restrictions will be removed quickly. In the meantime, CARE is preparing to provide clean water to accessible populations.
CARE's emergency response will include provision of items such as food, water purification tablets, soaps, shelter materials, basic medical supplies and cooking supplies.

An earthquake measuring 8.9 magnitude, struck Sunday, December 26, around 7a.m. local time off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island. This quake, the fifth largest in recorded history, has caused massive waves to hit much of
Southeastern Asia's coastline, including Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and Malaysia.
Sri Lanka has been the hardest hit according to news reports from CNN and the BBC. Leslie Keegel, Foursquare Sri Lanka national leader reports, "Over 5,000 people in Sri Lanka are reported missing due to the tidal wave that hit the coastal belt of our island. The eastern province is the worst affected. Twelve families of our Batticaloa city church were washed into the sea as they were praying. The pastor's wife and his two children are lost. General Supervisor George Niranjan lost his 13-year-old niece as she was swept away by the water. Her body has been recovered. The damage to human life is massive, let alone the loss of property and devastation to infrastructure."
Jeff Padgett, missionary to Malaysia, explains, "Our apartment tower swayed for about one minute, yet it appears that our building is okay. Several hours later, I just happened to look out the window and saw the tsunami approach our coast. There was no warning for the fisherman, families on the beach and residents along the coast. From our apartment on the 19th floor, Cindy and I witnessed the destruction of many fishing boats while others sank. Currently 53 people have died in our area of Northwestern Malaysia with many more missing. We are still waiting on updates from local officials, but over 1,000 homes have been destroyed and thousands left homeless. The Malaysian government declared the situation 'a disaster never
seen before in Malaysia's history.' To the north in Thailand, hundreds have perished in the area of Phuket."
South Asia Regional Coordinator George Butron relays this report: "The Ache province in Indonesia, which is closest to the epicenter, is flooded and over 4,000 people have died. Many more are homeless and without food and water."
A global effort is underway to coordinate assistance to those affected by the destruction of the earthquakes and tidal waves. Our regional coordinators, missionaries and regional councils of national leaders around the world are working to coordinate prayer and relief efforts in their countries. Please join us in prayer for everyone affected by this tragedy. If you would like to help with emergency relief efforts, a check can be designated for "Earthquake Relief Fund" and sent to:
